About Me

I was born and raised in Milwaukee, WI, but spent most of  my professional singing career in New York City. I have been interested in teaching throughout my solo career, and now devote myself to helping aspiring singers be all they can be vocally and as performers. My own background was in classical training, but as a voice instructor I have become more and more focused on musical theater style, as well. A specialty of mine is preparing high school students for university auditions (classical and musical theater), for leading roles in their high school musicals, as well as for competitions including NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing), WSMA (WI School Music Association) and the Hal Leonard Competition. Building a strong technique, excellent foreign language diction and basic musicianship are my top priorities, along with delivering solo repertoire with a naturalistic, winning presentation. Highly motivated singers - at all levels - are who I love to teach.

My Musical Education Background

I received my undergraduate degree is in Music Education from Milton College with a vocal and choral emphasis/piano minor on full scholarship.  I completed my master's degree in Vocal Performance from Syracuse University in upstate New York on a full academic and teaching fellowship. Further study included a summer in Blonay, Switzerland where I studied with soprano, Helen Boatwright at the Hindemith Institute. I have been teaching for more than 40 years.

Genres and Subjects Taught

My specialties are classical and musical theater style vocal technique and performance skills. I emphasize excellent diction in English, Italian, German, Spanish and Latin.

Lesson Rates

I teach 30 minute lessons for beginners at the rate of $35.00. More advanced singers are encouraged to take a 45 minute lesson at the rate of $50.00. Payments can be made after each lesson, or at the end of the month.

Ages / Skill Levels Taught

I have worked with students as young as 10, and adults of all ages. I have taught at the university level for many years, and have a special interest in high school and college age singers.

My Certifications and Awards

I was recently honored with a "Betty Award" in the Creative Genius category - the first of its kind - by Milwaukee Magazine in November of 2019. It was the capstone of more than 45 years of performing, conducting and teaching.

I sang leading opera and concert roles for 12 years based in NYC, and then joined the Metropolitan Opera for eight seasons before returning to the Midwest. I have been on the Voice rosters of UW-Milwaukee, Carroll University, Aurora University (IL) and the Chicago College of Performing Arts. As the Founding Executive and Artistic Director of Music by the Lake at George Williams College of Aurora University, I conducted and directed 14 years of concerts and full opera and musical theater productions. I have worked with hundreds of emerging young artists from the Chicago and Milwaukee areas, and have coached and taught many outstanding high school students in Wisconsin who have won scholarships to leading music conservatories in the area. Many are performing around the country and in European opera houses.

My Musical Influences

I grew up in a musical family of eight in the Milwaukee area. Music filled our home, as my siblings and I played several musical instruments. We all sang and danced (including three of my brothers!), and the stereo was never silent. We listened to everything from early Rock music (Buddy Holly, Elvis) to popular ballads of the day. I loved The Nutcracker, and listened to the score often as a young ballet dancer. My piano training introduced me to all the classical composers as a young girl, and voice lessons and Choir in Junior High and High School further developed a love of classical music. Singing in excellent college choirs exposed me to a broad swath of musical styles, and prepared me wonderfully to conduct and develop college and university choirs later in my career. Eight seasons with the Metropolitan Opera Chorus exposed me to a completely different repertoire, and every experience I had - both as a solo singer and chorister - now informs and inspires my voice teaching. My love of the art form has formed me throughout my life.
