About Me
I have been teaching private lessons for over fifteen years. I enjoy teaching students ages 7 through adult at all experience levels. As a teacher, my goal is to help my students become expressive, confident, thoughtful and joyful musicians who have a good balance of technical and musical skills. My students' own goals are always at the forefront in lessons, and I enthusiastically adapt my teaching style, curriculum, and choices of music and materials to suit each individual.
My students continually surprise me with their ability and dedication. They often hold first chair in their school band programs, have won placement in All-County, All-District, and All-State Bands and local youth orchestras, consistently receive Superior ratings at Solo and Ensemble Festival, and have also received college music scholarships.
My Musical Education Background
With over twenty years of flute experience, Emily Higgins is new to the Portland area. Emily is former principal flutist of the Union Symphony in Charlotte, NC and performed with the Alla Prima Flute and Harp Duo and the Quintessence Wind Quintet. She also has taught flute for over 15 years, and is now accepting students in Portland.
Emily holds a Bachelor of Music degree, summa cum laude, from the Hartt School in Hartford, Connecticut. There she studied with John Wion, longtime principal flutist of the New York City Opera, chamber musician, and solo and recording artist. Her other primary teacher has been Mark Thomas, an international soloist and founder of the National Flute Association. She has also studied flute with Kimberly Sopata, Elena Durán, Patricia George and Tadeu Coelho and piano with Eleanor Askins.
With a holistic mind/body approach to music, Emily has supplemented her academic study with further education in Alexander Technique, yoga, body mapping, and mindfulness meditation. She incorporates these techniques into her own playing and into her teaching.
In 2014, Emily Higgins and her duo partner Kirsten Carrell Osborne released their Alla Prima Duo debut album Song To the Waking Sun, which features flute and harp music inspired by the natural and spiritual world. It is available for purchase on CD Baby.
