About Me

When I meet people who were pushed into piano but never motivated, I wonder about their lives. Were they part of a community that participated music? Did the music of their environment connect with their piano lesson music? Did the piano seem an irrelevant tool?   I would like to offer my services to those interested in studying music through the art of piano-playing (or piano via the art of music...) My experience and training is in performance, pedagogy, composition, collaboration, and appreciation. My masters degree is from the Eastman School in Jazz Piano Performance, but I have invested equal energy into classical training, immersed myself into gospel, latin, and R&B traditions, and delved into other world musics.   I hope to find a few motivated students to teach, coach and guide, thoughtfully customizing lessons and methods for relevance to each student's curiosities, strengths and weaknesses (or "not-yet-strengths"), aged 8 to 108, any level. I welcome conversation with anyone interested.

My Musical Education Background

MM, Eastman School of Music, Jazz Piano Performance,1996

BA, University of Northern Iowa, Classical Piano, 1994

Genres and Subjects Taught

A holistic, individualized approach to music study, with piano as the central instrument.

I do not limit myself to one method, but work in collaboration with the student to find meaningful paths to the acquisition of musical skills and sensibilities.

Lesson Rates

Lessons are generally one-hour, once per week. Hourly Rate: $75.  Exceptions to the one hour length: Some younger children may do well with 45-minute lessons and some advanced or driven students may benefit by more time, especially those invested in a broader range of disciplines, such as serious study of both jazz and classical piano, solo and ensemble work, etc.

Ages / Skill Levels Taught

I teach motivated students of any "ready" age and level. Minimum for me is roughly seven years old, but that depends on the child.
