About Me
Thank you for taking an interest in music lessons! Many consider music to be the universal language in the world. No matter what language we speak, the music remains the same. Music can also aid in many other areas;
* language: it uses it
My Musical Education Background
I am a teacher certified by New York State in Music Education grades K-12, and in Special Education. I did my undergraduate work at the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam and my graduate work at Syracuse University. I spent one year teaching 8th grade chorus and music in the Churchville Chili Jr. High School, in Churchville NY. I currently work as a 7th & 8th grade music teacher in the West Genesee Central School District in Camillus, NY. I teach general music and chorus, as well as directing the annual school musical and teaching swing dancing! I have done work for the Cananstota Central School District, Lafayette Central School District and the Chittenango Central School District.
Genres and Subjects Taught
In studying voice, lessons will focus on how to effectively use the voice without hurting it. Today’s pop singers use a very dangerous style of singing, and many young people unfortunately model this. Varied literature will be used to teach music reading, posture, breathing, diction, pitch and rhythmic accuracy, tone, dynamics, and artistic expression ... Just to name a few! In studying piano, varied literature will be used to focus on music reading, posture, hand position and fingerings, note and rhythmic accuracy, sight reading, tone, dynamics and artistic expression, among many other things!
Lesson Rates
Lessons take place on a weekly basis and are generally scheduled in the afternoons and early evening. For students in the Camillus area, lessons will take place at either West Genesee Middle School. Lessons can also take place at the First United Church of East Syracuse. Please contact me to schedule a weekly lesson time.
Fees for lessons are $20 per person for a half an hour lesson. If there are two or more family members taking lessons, the fee drops to $15 per person. Lessons should be paid one month in advance.
Attendance is expected at each weekly lesson. If a lesson needs to be missed due to a planned event, please try to notify me at least one week in advance so the lesson can be rescheduled. If there is not a time convenient to both of us, that week will just be missed. You will not need to pay for lessons missed if you notify me at least one week in advance. In case of sickness or emergency, please try to notify me 24 hours in advance. If you have already paid for the month, that money will be applied to the next month
Ages / Skill Levels Taught
I am willing and able to accept students of all ages and abilities. I am currently teaching ages 4 through adult. Most of my students are beginning or intermediate, though a few are more advanced and are working on NYSSMA (New York State School of Music Association) levels IV & V. I also teach students with special needs and have learned just as much (if not more!) from them as they have learned from me.
My Certifications and Awards
I currently work for the West Genesee Central School district, which has just been awarded it's 10th consecutive “Best Communities for Music Education” by the NAMM Foundation. I am so proud to be part of such an amazing district!
