About Me

I have taught piano lessons for many years and still enjoy it. I have a Bachelor and Master of Music Degrees in Piano Performance. I stay current by participating in many musical activities such as playing for parties, weddings, etc., singing in the Community chorus and last year started a trio called, appropriately, the Mary Slaton Trio. This trio consists of me on piano, a saxophonist and a drummer. I perform both classical and pop music. I have also just started a community band in which I play French horn.

I am a member of the national, state and local professional musical organizations. I attend the state conventions to keep learning and also attended the national convention in March, 2011 My students do well in local and state competitions. I also teach music appreciation at Southern Union Community College.

My Musical Education Background

Bachelor of Music Degree in Piano Performance - University of Montevallo

Master of Music Degree in Piano Performance - Memphis State University

Genres and Subjects Taught

I teach from the traditional method books, augmenting with other music and worksheets as needed. I have no opposition to teaching pop music as long as they learn the basics of music. I stress correct rhythm and do a lot of chord recognition. If the student has the desire and ability, I work with them to enter classical competitions.

I encourage all my students to enter the performances sponsored by our local music organization. I also have a fun Christmas party in which the students perform pieces and play musical games. There is also a recital in the Spring.

Lesson Rates

I charge $75.00 per month due at the first of the month.

Ages / Skill Levels Taught

I feel that I am qualified to teach all ages including very advanced students. I have also recently begun teaching a 3 yr. old, something that I never thought I would do. This only works if the parent is actively involved.

My Certifications and Awards

State winner in 2009 and 2012 ,several honorable mentions
AMTA competition
Many winners in local festival
I perform several times each year for the Lunch performances at Jule Collins Smith Museum
Co-President for the 2013 - 2014 AOMTA (local music teachers organization.
