About Me
I live in Englewood, CO right now, but I have traveled quite a bit. My good fortune has allowed me to play and study music in China, the Czech Republic, and England. I grew up in the small town of La Junta and took lessons from a teacher 20 miles over. My best friend had started taking piano lessons when we were little and we were extremely competitive, so I had to take piano lessons too. It turns out that I loved it and I have been playing piano for 20 years now. Since La Junta was such a small town I started teaching in middle school so families wouldn't have to drive so far for lessons, so I have been teaching for 14 years.
My Musical Education Background
I have my Bachelor's in music from Western State College in Gunnison, CO and a Master's in education from Regis in Denver, CO.
Genres and Subjects Taught
I focus on classical, but I also teach pop, rock, jazz, ragtime, and just about anything you can sightread. My focus is on teaching technique and then including pieces that are of interest to the student. The technique will give the ability to play anything and the interest pieces make the practicing fun. I also encourage sight-reading practice and technical development.
Lesson Rates
I charge $20 for a 30 minute lesson and $40 for a full hour. Currently I can take cash and checks, but I will be set up to take credit cards soon.
Ages / Skill Levels Taught
I will teach ages 8-100+. I generally start with age 8 because students need some maturity and focus before they start and the lessons need to partly be their decision for them to remain invested in the practice time. If a student shows a great desire to learn and is ready to read and has the focus we can work with the age.
My Certifications and Awards
I have won the Damson Award, the Excellence in Music Award, and the Damson Student Performance. I also received several music scholarships while I was in school. I have a teaching certification.
My Musical Influences
I am a huge fan of the classics-Mozart, Chopin, and Beethoven. I love Rachmaninoff too. But I love modern artists like U2, Beats Antique, Sound Tribe, and Loreena McKennitt.
