About Me

I am a performing jazz pianist and singer, as well as bandleader. I began traditional piano lessons at 5, never thinking I would become a teacher myself. nor did I think I would veer off the classical music path and venture into the worlds of jazz, blues, improv, composition. I have taught  piano for 40 years and enjoy the challenge of meeting each student and exploring their musical interests with them. Some want to stay completely in the classical realm, others want to explore improv or composition or jazz. I have students who have wanted to learn Chinese, Irish, Persian, Russian, and  Brazilian, to name some adventures we have gone on.

For many years I also taught chorus and Orff music in public grammer schools, accompanied church choirs.

During 2020-2021 Covid I taught online and although my studio is once again open for in-person lessons, we have the luxury of  having lessons also online when sniffles, a flat tire or a thunderstorm make students want to stay home.

Genres and Subjects Taught

Piano- classical, jazz, blues, rock, improv, composition, theory.

I honor the desires of my students and help pick out repertoire that  follows their curiosity about numerous musical styles and genres.

Some students have asked to explore the music of the countries their families came from. Some want to play showtunes. It's always intriguing to see what a student wants to learn and also to introduce them to thingthey never thought about learning before.

Lesson Rates

Most children up through late middle or high school take a weekly 45 minute lesson. Older teens and adults take 60 or 75 minute weekly lessons.  I teach year round.  Please contact me for current tuition fees.

Ages / Skill Levels Taught

I have over 40 years experience teaching all ages. Currently my youngest is 6 and my oldest is 78. They range from total beginner, both child and adult, to  fairly accomplished adults.

My Musical Influences

I played mainly classical music growing up, taking lessons from 5 to 17. I also played string bass in orchestras and dancebands.  Then my interests broadened and I began learning jazz and Latin jazz piano as well as blues, rock, country. I have been  bandleader for many years and also sing. I do a lot of improv and some composing as well as some recording.
