About Me
I have a passion to ensure that all students love music and musical excellence. I have been teaching private students from ages 6-76 for twenty years. Many students have gone on to study music in college, but all have learned to love music.
In addition to teaching privately, I have taught high school general music, chorus and voice at a performing arts high school and class piano at a community college.
Performing experience includes serving as music director for a local church; worship leader; accompanying children's and adult choirs; soloist for numerous choral groups; directing children's choirs, and high school choirs.
I offer recitals twice per year and preparation for high school and middle school contests and auditions in piano and singing.
My Musical Education Background
I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Vocal Performance with a minor in piano from the University of Minnesota. I received Suzuki piano training and advanced vocal training at the MacPhail School of Music in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Since graduating, I have attended numerous master classes in both piano and vocal pedagogy.
Genres and Subjects Taught
Piano students receive a broad background initially in classical, folk and pop tunes with an emphasis on theory that applies to all areas of music. Intermediate students and beyond focus on the classics to develop technique and musicianship, but individuals are always welcome to add their favorite pieces from movie and pop hits.
Voice students focus on classics and Broadway literature. Younger teens also use folk song literature.
Music theory and sight singing is included in singing lessons.
Lesson Rates
Lessons are $25 30 minute lesson; $35 for 45 minutes and $45 for a 60 minute lesson. Families may take 10 percent of the second and subsequent students. I recommend students at the intermediate and advanced levels take a 45 to 60 minute lesson. Students pay for the entire month at the first lesson of the month. Those studying for the school year pay the same rate each month--e.g. if taking a 30 minute lesson you would pay $95.
Ages / Skill Levels Taught
Piano students can start once they are reading books at a second grade level and show interest in taking lessons. This is normally ages 7-9. But students can start at any age-- from 7 to 87!
Voice students should be at least 12. Boys should have changed to the male vocal register. I strongly recommend that all singers have a piano background in order to establish general musicianship. I do teach sightsinging and music theory for singers.
My Certifications and Awards
I am a member of the American College of Musicians which allows my piano students to compete in a national contest each spring. Many have been national winners.
I am a past member of the CMENC where I have served as vocal judge for numerous competitions.
