About Me
I have been teaching piano now for over 25 years and truly enjoy helping my students to find joy in their music. While I have had many award winners and students preparing for college music degrees in my studio, the most important goal for me is to make sure that my students love music and find self-expression in playing the piano.
My Musical Education Background
Bachelor of Music degree from Chapman University, Orange, CA. Master of Music degree (abt) in Piano Pedagogy and Musicology (specialty in Beethoven Studies) from San Jose State University. Training in Suzuki Piano from master teacher and at 7 Suzuki Institutes. Yamaha Music Program Training. Private lessons from Dr. Georgia Nicklett (student of Abby Whiteside) and Professor Aiko Onishi (student of Tobias Mattay and Edwin Fischer), Professor Fernando Valenti (harpsichord specialist) and Laurel Huber (Organ).
Genres and Subjects Taught
While the basis of my teaching is classical, the students may choose to add other genres such as jazz or pop. I teach an ergonomically correct technique for effortless performance, young children's music education including (but not exclusively) the Suzuki Method, theory, and music history. I do not have any particular method I use, but choose the method to suit the student. I also have a background in English Handbells (director, massed director & clinician) and children's choir.
Lesson Rates
Private lessons for all ages and levels at my studio on a Yamaha 6'3" grand piano. As a member of several music organizations, the students have many choices of recitals, evaluations, master classes and competitions in which they may choose to participate.
My Studio, the Rosetree Piano Studio, is between Murrieta Hot Springs Road and Los Alamos just east of the 215 freeway.
Most students begin with a half-hour private lesson (I do not teach classes) once a week. The tuition for this is $90 per month. A 45 minute lesson each week is $126 per month. An hour lesson is $162 per month. Please note that all lessons are private (parents can sit in, of course) and are held in my private studio in my home. I do not go to the students' homes.
Ages / Skill Levels Taught
I teach all levels, beginning to advanced, and all ages (from 4 years old through senior citizens).
My Certifications and Awards
Current President of the Music Teachers' Association of California, Temecula Valley Branch, Music Teachers' National Association, California Association of Professional Music Teachers, Temecula Valley Music Teachers' Teachers Association, National Guild of Piano Teachers
My Musical Influences
My first influences were my mother and sister, who play both classical music and jazz beautifully. Next would come my choir teachers - 4th grade through college - who introduced me to the joy of singing, accompanying choirs and vocalists on the piano and directing. My two wonderful teachers after I finished my Bachelors Degree influenced my teaching the most. Dr. Nicklett helped me develop my technique and was influencial in introducing me to the Suzuki Piano Method, from which I learned so much. Lastly comes Miss Onishi, who refined my performance technique and pedagogical (teaching) abilities.
