About Me
A Highland piper and solo competitor since the early 1990's and a "late bloomer" in terms of when I started playing the pipes, I was ecstatic at stumbling upon a teacher while in my early 40's who originally started me on this journey. If you've also had this latent desire, it's never too late in life to start - Don't waste time by waiting any longer. I take beginner students and can help you get into this fascinating art.
My Musical Education Background
My early years of playing clarinet starting in middle school through college and to first chair position in the Grand Rapids Youth Symphony Orchestra has given me a firm musical education and performance background. Further experience with the Highland pipes, the Irish uilleann pipes, and whistle have added to that experience.
Genres and Subjects Taught
My teaching of the Great Highland Bagpipe relies on an excellent tutorial lesson book and supplemented with Scottish and Irish traditional music. Primary emphasis is placed on proper and accurate fingering and ornamentation.
For additional details on the course of study and required materials, please visit the Lessons page on my website at (contact me)
Lesson Rates
Lessons currently (2020) run $25 for a 45-minute lesson at my home.
Arrangements can often be made for me to travel to your home at a slightly higher cost depending on travel distance.
Ages / Skill Levels Taught
I teach beginning to intermediate students of all ages.
My Certifications and Awards
I've played in midwest piping competitions my entire career and have won prizes in light music and piobaireachd (the classical music of the pipes). I encourage my students to do the same as an excellent incentive for improvement and a great way to overcome stage fright.
My Musical Influences
Various teachers who have guided me over the years include Robert Lovell (RIP), PM Sandy Jones, open-grade piper Colin MacLellan, PM David Martin gold metal piobaireachd winner, PM Drew Duncan, and numerous others encountered in piping workshops.
