About Me
As an instructor, I enjoy helping students reach their potential. I use a dual approach at learning music--theory and improvisation--because I want every student to enjoy music as much as I do.
I also believe a student does better learning and performing on their own instrument. Lessons are taught in your home on your instrument.
My clients are more than just students. We become friends. I have been blessed to meet some of the most amazing families and we continue our friendships long after their students are done with lessons.
I am a Christian and have worked with children in a variety of settings--as a piano instructor, summer kids camp teacher and coordinator, and in religious education. My family has always been involved in community volunteer work and thoroughly enjoys working with people.
When not busy with music, I spend time with my best friend and husband, Steve, and am mom to my three home-schooled teenagers.
My Musical Education Background
I attended a private school in Beloit, Wisconsin where my musical abilities flourished during high school. As a student assistant, I arranged the music and directed our musicians for choir concerts and community performances.
My first lessons were at age nine on a Wurlitzer organ. In middle school, I opted for piano and keyboard. My private music instructor was an under-graduate music professor. Along with musical theory, my training included improvisation, chording techniques, and "natural ear training" through our church music program.
I began teaching students when I was sixteen and have now been teaching for over 25 years. Since 1989, I have been the music director at our local church along with performing for special community events, weddings, and funerals.
Genres and Subjects Taught
I believe a musician can always learn new techniques and improvements! As an instructor, I enjoy exploring music with my students and perform a broad genre--traditional, patriotic, simple classical, easy listening/rock, swing/jazz, gospel, country, contemporary, and even an occasional heavy rhythm. My goal is to help you find your favorite style!
I also believe in a systematic approach to learning and use a popular and excellent course called the Faber Piano Method. It offers eight levels, progressing from primer to pre-college performance. As students progress, we add supplemental pieces of their interest.
Lesson Rates
Lessons are held in your home on your instrument. For locations over 15 miles from my house, add a $5.00 per week fuel charge.
30 minute lessons: $20.00
60 minute lessons: $40.00
Payments can be weekly or monthly. If the monthly option is chosen, all fees must be paid ahead at the first week of the month.
Yearly receipts are available upon request.
Faber Instruction Books cost between $18.00 and $22.00 per level. Most students accomplish one level per year.
Other possible fees:
Hall rental fees apply to any students participating in a recital.
Ages / Skill Levels Taught
I prefer to begin lessons at age eight or higher due to the child's academic understanding; however, ages below eight can be considered on an individual basis.
Lessons are available from age eight through adult. I also have experience in working with learning disabilities (OCD, Aspergers, Seeing Impared, ADD/ADHD) and am happy to help individuals with those challenges find happiness and excitement through music.
