About Me
Music should be fun!
If you want to learn quickly and become the best flutist or pianist you can become, I'm thrilled to invite you into my studio. I understand exactly what Directors in Texas expect, and I can help you achieve any goal you set for yourself (whether it's a 3 octave C-Scale or auditioning for college). Teaching is a privilege, and I've always made sure that my students are the very best musicians they can possibly be while maintaining the proper level of fun and respect.
Welcome!
Peabody Conservatory, Bachelors in Flute Performance
My Musical Education Background
Over 20 years teaching experience. During my tenure in Pittsburgh, 4 of the 5 members of The Pittsburgh Youth Symphony were from my studio. Not only have I taught privately, but I've been an Artist In Residence, and a consultant for SCUCISD in San Antonio with the responsibility of teaching all flutists in their 1st band, and beginning all new flute players with an emphasis on proper technique from the very start.
Also FUN! Music should be and always will be a passion - which for children/students means FUN! When music is fun, parents don't have to police their children to practice. Creating passionate players and future musicians will always be my primary goal.
Many of my former students have gone on to pursue music as a vocation.
Bachelors of Music from Peabody Conservatory (The Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University), 1992
Genres and Subjects Taught
From beginning flutists, to students auditioning for college, I am completely confident that I have mastered the material and understand what directors and teachers expect from their musicians. A summer flute choir is generally offered with an opportunity to perform for all involved.
I've taught piano to both beginners and intermediate students, and know that I will encourage a love of music in all those with whom I have the opportunity to work.
Adult students are welcome on both flute and piano.
Lesson Rates
Lesson rates are scheduled per month and payment is expected at the first lesson of each month.
30 minute lessons (recommended for beginners) - $160/month ($40/lesson in 4 week month)
60 minute lessons (intermediate and advanced) - $300/month ($75/lesson in 4 week month)
Makeup lessons will be offered one weekend per month.
Summer Flute Choir pricing TBA
Ages / Skill Levels Taught
Generally, 4th graders are the youngest beginners on the flute (mainly because, unless a curved headjoint flute is purchased, a child's arms are simply not long enough to allow their fingers to depress the keys). Piano students will be taken as early as 3 yrs, upon interview. Suzuki style lessons are offered for these younger students on piano.
Beginning to advanced flutists auditioning for college are all welcome, including adults.
My Certifications and Awards
As a member of the National Flute Association and the Texas Flute Society, I've judged many contests and District Band auditions.
4 members of Pittsburgh Youth Symphony (during my tenure in PA) were my current students. One of these students went on to All-State in Pennsylvania and continued to All-Eastern.
Taught over 20 SCUCISD District Band participants in San Antonio.
Voted best flute teacher in suburban Pittsburgh, 2001-2003.
My Musical Influences
I believe that to become good at anything it must be fun. My job as a music teacher is to create an environment where every individual student learns at his/her fastest pace while instilling a passion and love of music. Parents should not have to police their children to practice. Part of my job, is to teach them to love what they are doing, and motivate them to practice and succeed musically.
