About Me
An MTNA Nationally Certified Teacher of Music in Piano, holds a Bachelor of Music Degree in Piano Pedagogy (1986) with 20 years of teaching experience. Memberships include MTNA, IMTA, EIMTA and NGPT.
I believe that learning to play the piano artistically is an extremely worthwhile and enriching endeavor. My goal is to help each student achieve music literacy and artistry, which will enable them to personally enjoy and share music making throughout their life time.
To that end, I believe that students should understand what they are doing. By learning musicianship skills, such as scales, chords, arpeggios, transposition, harmonization, sight reading, and improvisation, students are given a hands-on approach to understanding theory along with affording them technical training for greater facility over the keyboard.
Playing the piano is a performance based skill, which requires special strategies and experience for success. Participating in as many performance opportunities as possible, such as recitals, competitions, adjudications as well as school and church events provides rich learning experiences that should help students gain confidence when performing before an audience.
Along with the practical need of performance experience, working toward an event can aid in motivation and help keep momentum going by keeping students always working toward a goal--short term and long term. Perseverance is a major factor to the success of learning to play the piano. It helps to have interesting music to play and goals to keep students progressing steadily along the way.
I believe studying the piano is fun, stimulates intellectually, comforts emotionally, brings joy and satisfaction in mastery, is an outlet for self expression, teaches discipline, and brings joy to others.
As a professional, I believe in the importance of continuing education and partnering with associates in my community. I have always been involved with my local teachers' association-- holding offices, chairing student activity events, and attending pedagogy workshops and conferences.
Another means of partnering in my community has been through accompanying for local high schools and middle schools.
I believe in the value of group lessons and am currently teaching senior adult music appreciation classes through a community college.
A Kawai upright piano and a Yamaha Grand Piano are used in my weekly private lessons.
My Musical Education Background
Bachelor of Music in Piano Pedagogy, Carson-Newman College (1986)
Genres and Subjects Taught
I use the Piano Adventures method books written by Randall and Nancy Faber for elementary to early intermediate level students. I also supplement with standard repertoire material even from the beginning levels. Intermediate through early advanced level students learn repertoire from the four musical periods: Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th and 21st Centuries.
With that being said, I appreciate the interest students may have in popular music and believe that it is an important part of a balanced musical education.

My Musical Influences
My first piano teacher, Janet Swaney, had a major influence on me and my desire to be an excellent pianist. Other important teachers were Dr. Paul Ridgway and June Miller. Another major influence came from my church family. As a church pianist, I received lots of encouragement and affirmation in my high school years.
