About Me
I have been playing piano for twenty-five years and have been teaching for over ten. In addition to teaching private piano lessons, I also teach music and physics at a high school. While I enjoy the academic side of teaching, it is music that is my passion. I enjoy seeing a student progress, as it demonstrates my ability as a teacher, but more so the student's dedication to learning to play the piano.
My Musical Education Background
I began taking piano lessons at six years of age and have been playing ever since. I graduated from a private university in 1998 with a Liberal Arts degree and a music concentration. I studied music theory for two years, conducting for one, as well as music history and vocal pedagogy. Through my lesson taking years, I was taught by a variety of teachers, from beginning teachers to professional classical pianists, who have shaped a unique and musical approach to my teaching style.
Genres and Subjects Taught
Although my main approach to the piano is classical, my musical background allows me to teach any style of music that the student wants to learn. I believe that true musicality is a sum of parts - technique, theory, note reading, playing by ear, music history, etc - and that including all of them to some degree or another allows the student to fully understand and appreciate music, regardless of instrument.
