About Me
Teachers Liz Hasbrouck and Maya Doumas were fellow piano majors at the University of Southern Maine and have a unified teaching philosophy and a desire to see their students excel at making music. They both love to play the piano, which funnels into an excitement to share the instrument with their students! Alicia Phelps joins the studio in September 2016, teaching both piano and voice.
My Musical Education Background
LIZ HASBROUCK: I've been teaching since 2001, and along the way earned my B.Mus and MM degree in piano pedagogy and performance from USM. I love my job, and nothing energizes me more than watching students learn new music. My goal is to create independent learners. Prior to music studies at USM, I studied for two years at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, majoring in sacred music with a piano emphasis. I have over fourteen years of teaching experience, ten of which have been in Cumberland. I am a member of the Maine Music Teachers Association and the Music Teachers National Association, and am a NCTM (Nationally Certified Teacher of Music, through MTNA). I have accompanied numerous recitals, vocal competitions (NATs), and served as accompanist for church services. When I'm not teaching, I'm living life with my three young kiddos. Most mornings, you could probably find us at a local playground or at the library! <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< MAYA DOUMAS: I have been playing the piano since I was 4, and it was such an incredible gift to me as a child. I believe it is my vocation to share my gift of music to all children, including those with special needs.Through my experience with teaching music and working with children with special needs for the past 9 years I am able to adjust my lessons to meet the individual learning styles of each child. The gift of music will stay with children for a lifetime. I strive to make their experience at the piano rewarding and positive. I earned a B.Mus in piano performance and pedagogy from USM. I previously earned a degree in Social Work and have also worked as an Ed. Tech for children with disabilities. I have taught piano in Cumberland for several years and am excited to be joining the Hasbrouck Piano Studio in fall 2015!
Genres and Subjects Taught
Our goal is to pass on our musical knowledge and training in an engaging way, using a variety of methods and materials. We teach from a classical approach. This doesn’t mean we teach only classical music, but we place a high emphasis on technique, music theory, and literacy of music notation. We aim to create independent learners. Regardless of how long a student studies with us, it is our hope that he or she will be equipped with the knowledge and curiosity to teach themselves pieces at or below their current level. We strive to make our lessons fun and engaging. We believe that piano is one of the easiest as well as one of the hardest instruments to learn. Learning is its own reward, yes, but sometimes an extra incentive is helpful. We use an assortment of prizes and small competitions throughout the year. Participation is optional – but the principle is simply that we want to inspire each student to do his or her best work.
