About Me

I absolutely love being a piano teacher! I have been teaching adults and children since I was a teenager. I do not teach from "fake books", or other alternative methods of playing the piano. My students learn to read notes, internalize rhythm, improvise and compose. I believe that it is my duty as a piano teacher to give my students everything they need to become extraordinary pianists.

My Musical Education Background

I began taking private lessons at age 8 and continued lessons for 10 years. I began playing for my church children's choir at age 10and started teaching others at the age of 14. I currently accompany my church's adult choir weekly and have performed and accompanied for numerous church services as well as community events. I have taught adults, children, and even one special needs child. I have done extensive research on different learning styles and teaching techniques to better improve student comprehension of complex musical concepts. I also have done extensive research on the phenomenon known as perfect or absolute pitch and I incorporate this training in my lessons as well.

Genres and Subjects Taught

I am not the average "turn the page and see what we have next" piano teacher. Although I do use method books, I also plan lessons based on what the student will be learning that week and use manipulatives, visual aids and games to reinforce the concepts taught. Teacher/student duets are used often to encourage motivation and interest in playing the piano. I use a combination of sight reading, ear training and improvisational drills to help the student gain a well-rounded piano education.

I have compiled a special "Introduction to the Piano" curriculum specifically for children ages 4 and 5. In this course, the child will learn simple rhythm drills, music dynamics, differences of black and white keys and even learn a few simple melodies to play on the piano. Children of this age learn by doing and having fun and that is what this course is all about. Group and private lessons are available for this course.

Students will have the opportunity to perform at 2 recitals during the year. One a casual recital done at christmas and a formal recital in the spring.
